Under the guidance of local rider Franck Renimel, Marine Allione, Marie-Morgane Le Deunff, Kiara Lylyk, Fiona Mangan, Aurela Nerlo and Constance Valentin started the Pointe du Raz Ladies Classic race in Brittany. A day with a few regrets.
No rest. Or almost. Just over a week after the end of the Belgian classics, punctuated by a breakaway by Constance Valentin and a promising 33rd place for Karolina Perekitko in Liège-Bastogne-Liège, the riders from the French team began their Breton tour at the Pointe du Raz Ladies Classic.
Well placed, Marie-Morgane Le Deunff and her team-mates "didn't pay enough attention", according to sport director Franck Renimel, when the race settled down with five riders taking off on the final circuit. "They had the legs. We got caught out." "Marine Allione had a mechanical problem at a key moment and Kiara Lylyk fell", he continued. In a word: "unlucky". "Right to the end. When we arrived to take 6th place, Marie-Morgane Le Deunff was forced to stop her effort and brake hard because of a TV bike."
Fiona Mangan: "Learning the lessons"
"The final circuit was frustrating for us as we missed the main breakaway of the day. We were also unlucky in losing a few girls in crashes, but up to that point we were working well as a team and riding well together, especially before each gravel section. I think we can learn a lot from today and channel our frustration into the next few races."
The day could have had a different flavour. Let's hope the two-time Irish champion's wishes come true at the Morbihan Classic.
Results :
20th - Fiona Mangan
25th - Marie-Morgane Le Deunff
30th - Contance Valentin
