At the end of a breathless final kilometre, young Canadian Kiara Lylyk came out on top. The 20-year-old cyclist finished 26th, 17 seconds behind the day's winner Lorena Wiebes (Team SD Worx - Protime). Unfortunately, her team-mates suffered numerous breaks, particularly on the downhill sections.
Endless efforts. On this first stage of the Tour of Burgos, the Winspace Orange Seal riders didn't count their pedal strokes. The day was more than difficult. "On the big descent of the day, things went really fast. We got caught out", admits sports director Damien Pommereau
Although the cyclists from the French team re-entered the peloton with 10km to go, they certainly left their strength behind. During the final kilometer, which was more than challenging, with sections at 9%, only Kiara Lylyk was able to keep up with the world's best. "Well placed", according to her team manager, the young prodigy did everything she could to snatch a dazzling top 30 finish.
Kiara Lylyk : "I ended up on Balsamo’s wheel"
"It was very tough to keep position all day. In the end I really tried to fight, and ended up on Balsamo’s wheel. I was suprised to be there and thought I could go for it. Then the pace ramped a lot in the last 300 meters and I didn’t have the legs yet to battle with the best. It gave me confidence for the position"
Tomorrow's finish is also scheduled to be a sprint, with a slight uphill false flat. Another rider is hoping to make her mark.
